Understand

What was once a small, remote town in New Zealand’s South Island has, since the 1980s, transformed into a major tourism hub. Originally known for its ski resorts, Queenstown has evolved into a year-round destination renowned for adventure tourism, natural beauty, and outdoor recreation.

Today, it attracts around 1.9 million visitors annually, making it widely regarded as the tourism capital of the South Island — if not all of New Zealand. For many travellers, it’s a must-see stop on any New Zealand itinerary.
